Statement
Shot on the Victorian coastline, using film with intentional light leaks to create a flame-like effect, ‘Fire & Water’ invites the viewer to consider the mutually destructive elements of fire and water as integral parts of our future. As the impact of climate change becomes more frequent and more destructive, the importance of water to our ecosystems has become startlingly obvious. With the increased frequency of droughts, comes the increased threat of bushfires, for which water is a vital antidote. This work prompts us to question our role in this catastrophic catch 22 we find ourselves in and to ask if there is a way to avoid this outcome.
Prudence is a photographer based in Naarm (Melbourne). With her interest in social and environmental justice, Prudence aims to use art as a tool to fight complacency, producing works that encourage the viewer to help challenge the status quo. Prudence shoots and experiments with 35mm and 120mm film, aiming to capture both human-made structures and dreamy landscapes, exploring the beauty of Mother Earth while also delving into the harsh realities of our impact on the natural environment. Through her work, she attempts to address her part in the neo-liberal and neo-colonial systems that continue to have a detrimental impact on global communities and on the environment.
