Statement
Payes continues to capture environments transitioning through human intervention. Payes‘s makes you believe that she has created fictional landscapes but wherever she points her lens we see mysteries unveiled as though she has some strange, potent third eye. We see forces unleashed and then abated. The romantic and the cynic of clashing elements culminating where volcanic rocks, minerals, glass and ash meet. This is a world in conflict with itself, dragging us into new directions.
Sonia Payes is an Australian artist working with photography, multi-media, animation and sculpture, based in Melbourne, Australia. A strong environmental narrative permeates Payes’s works and the cycle of re-creation is explored in her wildly dystopian landscapes, portraits and sculptures.
