Statement
There is a tension in the dialectic of presentation, which is made all the more palpable through visually examining how the image of oneself is made while being aware of the Other and how it is experienced without being concerned with others. There is a clear underlying comfortableness in these images, where staging a pose and being in the moment are constantly interchanging. In "Sitting", the two girls are completely at ease yet in dialogue with the photographer.
Sæthre-Mcguirk completed her Bachelor in photojournalism in 1997 and continued her higher education completing her Master’s degree in European cultural history and law in 1998 and PhD in philosophical aesthetics and art history in 2003 (Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven, Belgium). She is currently a professor of arts and crafts in teacher education at Nord University in Norway, and lectures on digital arts and crafts with an emphasis on questions concerning identity and presence through new technology.
Her research interests are at the crossing points between philosophical aesthetics, modern and contemporary art and design, and cultural pedagogy within the digital sphere. Her work explores areas of learning, creativity, and the creative act on and through the digital interface in relation to working with materials and the physical object. In addition to her written work, her practice includes curating public art and art criticism.
