Statement
This image was taken at the rally for abortion rights in Perth on 2 July 2022. This rally was in response to the overturning of Roe v Wade, a landmark Supreme Court case from 1973 which has allowed access to legal abortion services in the United States for the past five decades.
Protests occurred in countries all over the world to stand in solidarity with people in the United States, and prompted a reflection on local laws and access to abortion services.
In Western Australia, abortion is still regulated by the criminal code and costly surgical abortions requires a minimum of two doctors to approve the procedure. These are the strictest laws for abortion in Australia and directly impede on the human rights and autonomy of people with uteruses.
This image aims to provoke a sense of indignation, injustice and most of all, solidarity.
