Statement
I love the serendipity of natural light. Not everything is within one’s control. Natural light changes. Minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day. Capturing the light is first and foremost. Capturing the moment is vital. Capturing the soul is the ultimate.
Alun’s career has always been visually focussed. During his thirty-year career in Advertising, he has been a Creative Group Head and Creative Director. Although writer-based, his strong visual conception resulted in his practice being a balance of right-brain and left. As much a visualist as a wordsmith. His words drew pictures too. During this period Alun has been working with some of Perth’s, London’s and Melbourne’s most creative professional photographers, many becoming good friends. This became his unofficial apprenticeship. His inspiration while Creative-Directing Still and Film shoots. All the while developing his own narrative style for his own practice.
More recently, Alun’s Film and Television Production career with MagoFilms in partnership with his Producer wife Marian has been geared towards Creative Development, Writing, Line Producing, Book photography plus On-Set Promotional, Social Media and General Photography. Alun is a writer with a passion for photo-taking. Or a photo-taker with a passion for writing. Alun prefers to shoot and output in monochrome. Removing the distraction and razzmatazz of colour. Allowing the image to tell the story and to shine. Alun’s enduring theme has been people. His love is the reportage-style image. Often with an internal and discernible narrative. Real people with real stories. Alun’s Instagram, @humansinfocus, is a testament to this. Not the majesty of a spectacular golden sunset, rugged red outback hill-scape or wild windswept coastline for him. It’s people that are his focus. Placing humans in focus.
