Statement
The Broken Land (An Tir Briste) is a series of images made on the Isle of Skye and the St Kilda Archipelago in Scotland. Taken on a camera damaged in a fall from a mountain ridge, the resulting photographs depict a world out of focus, peaks looming menacingly above the viewer. These disorientating photographs were accompanied in a small publication with lyrics by Australian musician and author Nick Cave, translated into Scottish Gaelic for the first time.
Alex Boyd is a Scottish photographer & curator. His first book St Kilda - The Silent Islands was shortlisted for a Saltire Award, the second, The Isle of Rust (with writer Jonathan Meades) was released in 2019. His work is held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, the Royal Photographic Society, The V&A and the Yale Museum of British Art among many others.
