The focus of this project is the Kimberley region of North Western Australia. The Kimberley is often photographed and marketed as the last true wilderness of Australia. The collective name of the region itself evokes images of remoteness, grandeur and freedom.
However, rather than focusing on the sublime qualities of the region this current series is exploring the tensions and dynamics between natural and developed spaces. As development, tourism and investment increase across the region through plans such as “The White Paper for the Development of the North” this series is documenting an area on cusp of further change.
Steven Cutts, originally from the UK, is a long form documentary photographer based in the Kimberley region of North West of Australia. He works on personal projects that explore ideas of the environment and history told through landscape, still life and portraiture.
